Exam booking for a test in current academic year (resit)
You will be booked automatically for the resit in one of our resit periods. You may check our calenders to find out which modules can be retaken and when: https://intranet.maastrichtuniversity.nl/nl/fhml-studenten/studieverloop/wanneer-wat
As of one week before the resit test takes place, you can check in Student Portal if you are booked correctly: Student Portal > My Courses > More actions. The test will also be visible in your time table.

Exam booking for a test from a previous academic year (exam only)
All students who have not passed the test for this module in a previous academic year, will be booked automatically for the test during the regular block period. You will be enrolled in the new course in Canvas but not scheduled for a tutorial group and other educational activities. If you do not wish to participate in this test at the end of the regular block period please de-register via askFHML.

Course information

Description: EN:

Clinimetrics focuses on the science of clinical measurement, addressing the development, evaluation, and interpretation of measures of health-related phenomena in research and practice. As a key methodological field in epidemiology, it covers concepts, quality, and interpretation of health and exposure measurements, which are central to studying outcomes and determinants. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding of measurement theory and properties, including reliability, validity, responsiveness, and interpretability. Topics include health and functioning concepts, measurement methods, instrument development and evaluation, and diagnostic research. While related to psychometrics, the focus is on practical application in clinical and epidemiological contexts.

Goals: EN:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Understand principles of classifying health and disease using international classification systems.
  • Understand types of health and exposure measurement methods and their applications.
  • Understand clinimetrics, including theory of measurement in health research.
  • Understand measurement quality concepts: validity, reliability, responsiveness, and interpretability (COSMIN framework).
  • Understand development and evaluation of measurement instruments, including translation and cross-cultural validation.
  • Understand critical appraisal of measurement tools and exposure/health indicators.
  • Understand principles of diagnostic research and evaluation of test accuracy.

Applying knowledge and understanding

  • Critically assess and advise on study protocols and published clinimetric or diagnostic research.
  • Apply principles of instrument development and evaluation to assess or design valid, reliable, and responsive measurement tools and diagnostic strategies.

Making judgments

  • Form balanced judgments on the use and suitability of measurement instruments and diagnostic tests in epidemiological and clinical contexts.

Communication

  • Communicate on the design, methodological issues, and findings in clinimetric and diagnostic research to both expert and non-expert audiences.

Learning skills

  • Continuously develop advanced knowledge and skills in measurement theory, instrument development, and diagnostic evaluation through study and self-directed learning.
